“I’m happy with the way our girls played. They were good competition for us,” said Safford coach Karen Cornelius. “I’m was glad to see we pulled ahead early. We will play next Wednesday and, hopefully, get into the final four.
Safford had to win five of nine matches in order to move on to the second round of state. They did that in the first five singles matches they played.
Safford’s number one, Polly Evans, finished her match first, well ahead of the other players, winning in straight sets. Evans beat Meagan King, 6-0, 6-0.
“I thought I did well. I had some good shots and, hopefully, we will continue to do well in round two of state,” Evans said. “I’m excited to keep going, keep playing we'll and see how we do.”
